In the United States, Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It establishes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

To most Americans, Labor Day marks the symbolic end of the summer. The weekend before Labor Day has become an important sale weekend to many retailers in the United States, possibly even the largest sales date of the year, aside from Black Friday. Ironically, due to the importance of Labor Day weekend, employees in retail usually work longer hours on Labor Day.

Most American schools start school the day after Labor Day.
