The limited edition 3DS XL with Animal Crossing: New Leaf pre-installed.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is only compatible with the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL.

Features[]

Many of the 3DS features are a step up compared to the earlier Nintendo dual screen consoles. The Nintendo 3DS website states that the 3DS and 3DS XL show 16 million colors, while the DSi only shows roughly 250,000. The 3DS has two cameras on the front, allowing it to take 3D pictures. Comparatively, the DSi only had one front camera, and no 3D capabilities. The upper 3DS screen is 3.53 inches wide, and the 3DS XL screen a whopping 4.88 inches wide. Comparatively, the DSi screen size is only 3.25 inches in width.

The 3DS earned its name for its ability to show three-dimensional images. This is the first handheld Nintendo console to display content in three dimensions. The 3D display on the top screen can be viewed without glasses or special lenses, and can be reduced or disabled entirely with a sliding button on the right side of the upper screen.

Another uniquely new feature of this console is a joystick on the left side of the console, above the direction pad. In New Leaf, the joystick controls character movement across the map, as opposed to the direction pad in previous iterations of the game.

The 3DS does not support Game Boy Advance games, but it does support DS and DSi games. 3DS games are not supported by any console other than the 3DS itself and the 2DS.

Preorder with New Leaf[]

A few months before the release of New Leaf in North America, Nintendo offered preorders for a special Animal Crossing 3DS XL for $230-250 (in most places). The 3DS XL from the preorder features an Animal Crossing themed design and comes with the New Leaf software pre-installed on it. In the UK, players received an Isabelle figurine and a Town Hall figurine with their preorder.
